Now this is not necessarily the kind of book I would buy. Well more fool be because I would have missed an absolutely smashing book. I loved it. It’s so well written and has really strong characters. It’s written on different timescales, starting in 1980 and ending in 1997, and from different points of view: Josephine’s and her daughter Clare’s.

It’s a very clever book, it’s funny and tender and sad and your heart goes out to each of the main characters in turn. Josephine starts off with such high hopes and good intentions but, unfortunately, these tend to fall by the wayside. Clare is. Young girl who so wants to please her mum and for her family to be happy but sometimes things are just beyond your reach. The family - Josephine and her husband Michael and their two kids Clare and Thomas - is so appealing and you really want things to work out for them all.

This is a book well worth reading. I’ve never read this author before but I will certainly hunt out other books by her.
