At the start of this book Josephine is leaving her Irish home and family to pursue a life in London. There seems to be some urgency about her flight and over the next 294 pages we learn why.
It's a tale told from the dual perspective of her and her daughter Clare. A secret that has been buried away for 17 years but that is about to be exposed when the family return to Ireland as Josephine's mother is ill.
Clare knows that her Mum is sad but probably doesn't realise how her Mum's issues are starting to become damaging for her, there are already signs of a possible eating disorder.
This is a poignant study of how sins/abuses from the past continue to affect the future. How it's possible to keep a lid on things by not facing them but how they insidiously affect every single aspect of your life. When the truth is revealed will it open floodgates that it's then impossible to close?
The book ends leaving you with as many questions as it does answers and is a beautiful and haunting read.
