Her Mother’s Daughter is Alice Fitzgerald’s debut novel. It is quite well written but I find the way the narrative is shared by the mother and daughter ends up being clumsy. This seems to be a recent fashion as there are a few novels using the same concept.
This is the story of Josephine who flees Ireland to start a new life in London but cannot leave her childhood trauma behind. She marries and her ten year old daughter Clare is the second narrator. Clare is a mixed up character often acting as a much younger child which could be the result of the psychological pressures of her home life caused by her mother’s problems.
Not a book I can wholeheartedly recommend but the subject matter is very thought provoking.
