What a lovely novel! This has elements of Carrie's War with the evacuees and a Welsh backdrop. Our main character is a rather nervous boy, unsure of his own abilities. His mother cuts an impressive figure, working to preserve culture during war time. There's a real sense of what it was to live day to day with rationing of everything. The three central characters are brought to life well. A good read.
