Although the story is a "stand alone" it reads better when you have met the characters in "I Spy" which is set in Bletchly Park and gives an insight into what Ned and his Mum are doing in a slate mine in Wales.
After making their way to Wales,by surreptitious means,Ned feels unwelcome from Harri the son of their host but he does get on with Anna-an Austrian refugee and whose parents were sent to an internment camp.
Having signed the Official Secrets Act neither Ned or his Mum can talk about their work in the mine which frustrates Harri no end.
Ned becomes an apprentice joiner and works on making frames to keep the priceless art works safe whilst they are stored in the mine.
His Mum has an idea to present a"Picture of the month" and endeavours to send it down to the National Gallery for everyone to view but after the first Ned's Mum disappears and so starts the adventure-Ned,Harri and Harri's Mum's seeing eye dog make their way to London smuggling the next "Picture of the month" in the dogs jacket AND pursued by???
Do they get there, who is after them,do they find Ned's Mum???
