Set roughly a year after the first book (I, Spy) finished; we join one of the characters, Ned, as he travels to Wales with his mother where she will take up her new post with the National Gallery, working to protect and preserve precious artworks and artefacts.
Naturally, Ned and his mother are viewed with great suspicion and hostility by the locals in the tiny Welsh village that they are posted to. Ned has to work hard to fit in and win the trust of the villagers, all the while trying to help his mother with her important preservation work.
This book is the second by the author based in wartime Britain; and whilst it is nice to have the backstory of the central character, it is not essential and the book could quite easily be read as a standalone.
As with the first, it puts the characters in historical situations with historical figures. It is an easy and fun read.
