I was unaware of the podcast hosted by Rick Edwards and Dr. Michael Brooks, but after reading this it has made me interested in seeking it out. In this book they use movie examples of ways of dying and then backs them up with how accurate the science of the movie is.

From pandemics to asteroids, predators to robots, the authors provide interesting scientific facts in a funny and informative framework. Each chapter uses one specific example of a film to explore a scientific idea. However, I think this format works against the book slightly. If you come to a chapter where it is based around a movie you haven’t seen, it can be somewhat frustrating and difficult to relate to.

I’d really recommend this as a coffee table book. Something you dip into every now and again rather than necessarily reading cover to cover.

Although I wouldn’t call this a must read, I definitely learnt a few things and it was a unique way of examining a variety of big films from the last few decades.
