Having read previous books by Susan Lewis, which I have enjoyed, I was aware the plot of this novel would most likely be a family drama, despite the misleading thriller-esque start.

This book portrays all that we see daily in newspapers and on the news. Gang violence, vulnerable children, internet predators, poverty. We see this so often we tend to gloss over the truth of it all but having it laid out in front of me really made me acknowledge it.

This book isn't all about doom and gloom as you may suspect from the previous paragraph. It is about family love, protecting your family and how there are still people who will pick you up when you're knocked down.

Angie, a single mum after her husband was brutally murdered, loses her eldest son to a notorious gang. Left to look after her two youngest children she gets in to crippling debt and faces eviction from her family home. Daughter, Grace, tries to help but ends up in a situation no-one should ever find themselves in. And all Angie wants to know is if her eldest son is still alive.

I thought this book to be well written, emotional and powerful whilst covering sensitive themes. The ending, however, didn't feel entirely believable to me. Overall I did enjoy this book.
