I have changed my feelings towards this book many times and while that frustrates me as a reader it is also what makes reading reviews and other people’s opinions so interesting.

My initial disappointed arose from the fact I thought this was going to be a far more dark and gritty story.

I loved the front cover and was immediately drawn to the book. It tells of Angie Watts whose husband is murdered and then the events that follow after this incident that end up sending Angie’s life spiralling out of control.

The sentence How far would you go to keep your family safe? made me feel like there would be far more suspense and thrill within the pages.

It started off with quite a brutal death and indeed this book does discuss the darker side of life. Gang crime, drugs, homelessness, poverty, human trafficking and how these things all connect but only on a very surface level.

Unfortunately I didn’t really care enough about the main character to connect with the hardships she was going through and so her trials and tribulations throughout the bulk of the book just seemed to drag when what I really wanted was far more depth and action.

From reading the acknowledgements I can see that the author decided to steer away from this path and instead to try to make a more hopeful story but in doing so I feel the excitement as a reader was lost.

I commend the author for shining a light on important issues such as mental health, suicide and the other topics mentioned earlier but there was just some substance missing for me especially with how everything is neatly wrapped up at the end.

Thanks as always to @readersfirst for the opportunity to review this book.
