Susan Lewis is an incredibly successful author and she certainly knows how to tell a story. However, personally, this is the second book I've read of hers this year and it just left me cold.
She's making a LOT of social commentary in this book - repossession, homelessness, gang culture, mental health, universal credit, grooming - the list just goes on and on. To be honest I found it all a bit much - this unrelenting misery until suddenly one man provides the key to solving all her problems. Oh yes, not just solving her immediate problems but sorting out her entire life/future. He's got so many useful contacts that manage to solve absolutely every wrong that's happened to her in the last 5 years.
For me it was all a bit too contrived, too formulaic - a bit like story writing by numbers.
Her fans will undoubtedly love it, because they love her formula. Sadly, I'm not fussed at all.
