I enjoyed Susan Lewis' writing in this novel. Initially, I was worried that it might not be the kind of book I would enjoy, but this novel certainly throws you in at the deep end of the action and made me want to read on. The storyline focuses around a single mother struggling to support her children and covers topics of homelessness and debt in a way that clearly demonstrates a real empathy from the writer for those who have experienced these situations. Lewis herself writes in the acknowledgements that this has more of a 'happy ending' than most stories such as this in real life, but despite this, I felt that it was a realistic portrayal of these situations, aside from a twist later in the book which felt slightly far fetched.
I would recommend this book as a summer read - it has integrity to it, but contains enough light relief to still be enjoyable.
