I read a lot of thrillers, but as I haven’t read anything by David Jackson previously, was looking forward to it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and didn’t find it an issue that I hadn’t read the first book in the series.
The characters are credible with their flawed personalities, which makes them realistic, particularly Cody, as he battles with his traumatic past, bringing humanity to a very grim story. Often I find the protagonists in thrillers are not very appealing, but I really liked Cody and Webley
The setting is interesting placed in Liverpool, during the build up to Christmas. The descriptions are extremely visual, and it is obviously a place the author knows well, I am intrigued that he is now writing about Liverpool rather than New York in previous novels.
Some of the descriptions are quite harrowing, and the introduction of clowns to the story I found totally chilling.
There are twists, red herrings and clues dropped subtly in right up to the final pages, where there is one final surprise waiting for the reader...
