My first experience of David Jackson' writing and a thoroughly enjoyable one. He paces the plot expertly and gives you just enough to keep you turning the pages.

Set in Liverpool at the height of a bitterly cold winter we start with a captivating opening: a gruesome and graphic murder of a seemingly wholesome character.

We are introduced to our protagonist DS Nathan Cody and are given hints
of previous traumatic cases that have destroyed relationships and left both physical and mental scars, he faces an ongoing battle to maintain his sanity in an increasingly dark period of his life.

The dark themes of murder, voyeurism and childhood abuse are explored thoroughly but well balanced with intelligence, wit and humour throughout.

The relationships between characters and the characters themselves are well explored and properly realised. There's a depth to each character that enables us to feel a real connection leading to a deeper understanding of their morals, motivations and actions. The biggest compliment I can give is that I will genuinely miss the characters of Nathan Cody, Megan Webley, Footlong Ferguson and Grace Meade.

I eagerly await the next instalment of the series.
