When I first started reading this book I found it a little hard going and fact heavy, but what made it unputdownable was the fact that interlaced with the incredible histories of trial and error of various transplants throughout the years, were the heart wrenching stories involving real operations and real people. The cases of young teachers with liver failure, alcoholics, for whom people wondered whether a transplant was ethically the best option, as well as little ones who had fallen down the stairs and young students who had crashed their car in the peak of their health all kept me turning the pages. I cried, I smiled and I was surprised on many occasions by the difficult decisions that had to be made and the extensive gut instinct research that went on before any of today's successful transplants became a possibility.

Not at all my usual genre of book, but some of the real life situations from within will stay with me for a long time!
