Everyone has a different taste in books and I personally feel that this one is a little bit like marmite, you’ll love it or hate it.

The book is a combination of anecdotes pertaining to the author’s surgical experience in the field of transplants and additional commentary on the history and evolution of this field.

Personally, I enjoyed reading about the history of transplants but this could be quite dull in places, particularly when he writes about the discoveries of certain immunosuppressive medications. He does share some of his own cases and these were particularly enjoyable, I just wish he had shared more of these stories although I can understand why he didn’t (confidentiality maybe?)

The book assumes a reasonable knowledge of anatomy. Whilst many key terms are explained (anastomoses, xenotransplantation etc), the placement of the anatomy is not explained. The author quite likely assumed that people who choose to read his book would approach it because they have an interest in the field and possess this basic knowledge.

Personally, I enjoyed this but I can certainly see why others may not.
