I liked the characters straight away, Jo with her longing for home and Tessa feeling lonely and inferior battling to keep going in a physically demanding job. Neither are satisfied with their lives as they are but are reluctant to admit this to anyone. An intriguing start to the story which has given me a taste for reading the rest to see what happens to them.
