The opening scene of this book is set in a butchers shop on Christmas Eve. Jo has returned to her parent's shop for one last Christmas. She hands out sherry to all the waiting customers and then goes to the pub with her brother. The impression is of lots of human interaction and a family who loves one another. The second chapter in stark contrast outlines the sad and lonely life of Tessa who has nobody and believes she is suffering from a degenerative disease.
