The story of how to belong is told from the view point of two women. Both grew up in the Forest, one is trying to avoid her past and the other is trying to return to hers.

Jo left the Forest to be a lawyer in London, yet doesn’t feel like she belongs there. Jo decides to return home and take on the family business.

Tessa is haunted by a childhood trauma and rejection by her family. She is a farrier who is battling an unknown medical condition. Tessa too left the Forest thinking she had found her calling but has returned in disgrace.

The book follows their intertwined stories as they both try to figure out who they are and where they belong.

The story is quiet and unassuming yet is filled with sadness and questions. I’m not sure either has got to their belonging when we leave them!

A sub character is Liam, Jo’s childhood best friend who has remained in the Forest. He provides a counter balance to Jo and Tessa’s stories. I feel his character could have been explored further.
