Compelling writing with strong understanding on the complexity of loneliness and isolation. We are introduced to jo butler, surrounded by a loving and successful family, the hustle and bustle of running a busy shop at Christmas, the festivities and joyful exchanges brought to life all around jo, but the reader can sense that jo feels removed from the joyous affair. It becomes apparent that despite the people and her seemingly successful career, jo feels adrift and emotionally removed.

Then we are introduced to Tessa, and her circumstances are very different to jo. She is very much alone, content to be working as a farrier and engaging as little as possible with the community and the people she does work for. Her arrival to shoe some horses at the stable opens up a new enlightenment. Tessa has a seizure whilst working, it is not the first and it harbours an undiagnosed cause to which her isolation draws dark conclusions.
