A well-paced and immersive thriller, How To Kill Your Best Friend will leave you craving a luxurious holiday on a sun-drenched beach, but too scared to dip your toes in the water.

With a title like this, your intrigue will be piqued straight away. Who wants to kill their best friend? Why is somebody out for revenge? And how are they going to do it? The latter is explored for you, with intertwining chapters by an unnamed narrator considering various methods of how to kill somebody.

And as to who’s behind the scheming, this is interesting to try and figure out at first, but the answer actually comes about halfway through. But that doesn’t kill the suspense, because this is only half of the story, and something much more mysterious is going on.

All of this is heightened more by the remote but luxurious resort which is described brilliantly, really giving you a feel of the surroundings. What I loved most was the threat of something lurking in the water. As somebody who is scared of fish/the vast openness of water, I got goosebumps from the descriptions of this ominous figure gliding under the surface.

How To Kill Your Best Friend is quite a straightforward thriller but a very enjoyable one at the same time. The characters are interesting, their pasts hold plenty of secrets, and all of these tensions lead up to a climactic confrontation of the truth.

There’s not a lot of action and the twists aren’t big, but I really enjoyed seeing this mystery unravel, and Elliot’s gripping writing kept me glued to the page.
