I received a free copy of this book from Readers First in exchange for an honest review.
Overall this is a well plotted, decently written mystery-thriller. The clue to the plot is kind of given away by the title – how to kill your best friend. Inserted at various points throughout are descriptions of methods of potentially killing said friend. Although they read perfectly well, I did find them a bit of a distraction from the main storyline of the book.
The range of characters is pretty extensive and it did feel like quite a slow burner – Elliot slowly builds up her characters as the book alternates between two different points of view. Both have secrets to keep so it builds up a lot of twists and hidden motives behind each individual. I did like the way the characters are slowly unravelled so that we can pear inside their minds and figure out what is making them all tick.
The setting is perfect for making this a summer holiday read – an almost deserted top of the range holiday resort. It just adds to the suspense that they all get marooned there by the weather because no matter what dirt got dished up, what secrets finally revealed, doing a runner wasn’t an option. This helped build the overall tension for me and help to up the stakes progressively as the weather worsened – the tail end of the book is just an explosion of action, drama, revelations and plot twists. It would also do really well if it were adapted into a movie.
