This book draws you in from the very first page and it is difficult not to fly through the pages looking for answers.
The book is set in 1803 and sets the scene nicely, with detailed descriptions of what New York would have looked like in that period. It is clear to the reader who is seen as more important (white men) and it gives the reader a greater understanding of what it would have been like to live in New York during that era.
A young girl is found dead in the alleyway. The horror of what has happened to her makes the reader want to keep reading and find out who did this to her and get some justice. However, the characters do not seem to care as greatly as the reader, suggesting that occurrences such as that happen frequently. The book is so gripping and I found myself thinking about it when I had put it down.
