I missed the first of this series by Paddy Hirsch but was intrigued by Hudson’s Kill on Readers First. The premise sounded exactly like something I would read and I wasn’t wrong.

Reminiscent of the Alienist and even Peaky
Blinders, it’s a beaut.

We’re transported to New York in 1803 to a city filled with gang violence (between black and Irish gangs) where a young black girl is brutally murdered. Marshal Justy Flanagan has to find the killer before the mob does.

Hirsch paints New York for us almost as if we are there. The slang is something to get used to but adds to the dark atmosphere of the book. ( there’s a super helpful glossary at the back if your stumped).

I really like Justy, such an interesting and engaging character, has principles which he sticks to. The ideal lead for a book set in this period. Justy partners up with Kerry O’Toole to find the perpetrator to the girls murder from the start of the book.

Both looking for justice and investigating the girls murder before the mob takes over, they find themselves in the underbelly of
New York, it’s dark, shadowy communities on the skirt of the city. Asking questions draws attention, which they soon find out. They realise that there’s more to this murder than they initially thought.

I like how rich the story is and how it also touches on the issues of the society both at that time and for our present day. Immigration, segregation, gang violence and racism.

I loved this historical thriller, the period style, fast pace and dark atmosphere was a hit for me. I’ll be looking to read the first of the series and for future books from Paddy Hirsch.

Thank you Readers First and Corvus for this beautiful book.
