It has taken me a very long time to read this book, and I have read many others in between! it just didn't draw me in enough to make me feel compelled to finish it there and then - as others have along the way... I wasn't a fan of the cover in the first instance as I felt it a little busy (as mentioned in my first impression) but as I explained, the first few chapters reveal why the author chose this style and detail - all due to the complexity of the story, the characters, and the historical reality in which the story is set.

I found the writing pretty easy to get to grips with - great imagery - although I found some parts dragged, and so skipped paragraphs a little too enthusiastically. I usually catch myself at these points and make myself re read them but in this instance I just carried on, not feeling like I had missed much, and ultimately trying to finish the book as quickly as possible...

The story is politically based with a murder investigation at the start - our author is not afraid of gore and the small details! - surrounded by a battle of gang culture, and with complex relationships and red tape at the heart. The ins and outs of the book are interesting and I found it a good story, it just didn't have that wow factor to keep me going and so I read it in forced fits and bursts. A great book for those who like this genre but just not for me this time!
