Where to begin. I can't say I've ever been to New York in the early 19th century but I certainly feel like I have now. Hirsch describes every face, ally and back story as if it were a Van Gogh painting, bold, simple and breathtaking. We meet realistic characters with wonderful differences and connective similarities. By page 27 you would have met Kerry and her young companion Rosie, a few Watch wardens and some slightly drunk onlookers. If books set further back in history are not quite for you, please do not dismay. Look forward to the relationships that leave you wanting more, even with the first encounter and the gruesome yet authentic murder in a dark alley. I implore you to give this book a chance and be dragged back 216 years to experience this enthralling tale.
