Justy Flanagan has been a Marshal for 3 years when we re-join him at a time when racial tensions are growing as New York grows to encompass its larger population. As battle lines are drawn by the Irish and Black gangs to avoid the loss of territory and influence the brutal death of a young girl adds to the growing maelstrom.
This is the second of Hirsch’s novels to feature Justy and his cousin Kerry O’Toole and it shows how their lives have developed since the opening book in the series. It also features a plot that looks at the threat felt by some at the growth of other cultures and religions at a time of great social change. In this respect it is a reflection on today’s society as is its focus on the ability of the rich few to use and abandon the outcasts of society.
This is a very good addition to the Justy Flanagan series and I look forward to the next book in the series.
