The way Grace Dent writes about food evokes memories of childhood that I thought I had forgotten. The writing is about the very essence of a working class childhood, with its references to home improvements (a vestibule, the very definition of aspiration!) and learning from an early age that you were never going to be chosen to carry the brownie flag at church parade. I had forgotten that I had longed to go camping in France rather than having holidays in Pontins, but Grace’s Dad’s derision that anyone would want to sleep in a tent brought it all back.
I found myself smiling as I read the first chapter, and I really look forward to reading the rest of this memoir.
