Grace Dent writes and speaks so well. She's articulate, intelligent and really funny. And from page 1 of this first impression she had me hooked. She recalls her 1980s Carlisle childhood, which is substantially seasoned with memories of food - from Hubba Bubba bubble gum (the holy grail for all kids, despite most parents hating it) to Heinz steamed puddings. What a richly evocative memoir, the characters and the memories had me wincing and laughing in agreement as they seemed so similar to my own. A warm and wonderful book and I would love to read more. It's made me feel hungry!
