I’ve followed Grace Dent for many years as I love her style; her wry wit is writ large over these opening pages. By turns funny and tragic, without being mawkish, I fully expect to cry buckets by the end.

Grace’s observations about family life and the role food plays in it will ring true for many in the same generation, especially those who hail from the north. There’s something about the way it’s intrinsically part of the fabric of life that Grace captures so brilliantly, without over-egging the pudding (sorry!).

The first 60 odd pages have really whet my appetite and I long to know more about Grace’s journey from Carlisle to London and everything in between. I hope there’s plenty about her role on Masterchef as a guest critic but am also interested to learn more about her life as a Guardian columnist and how her family felt about her departure for the south and subsequent success.
