I requested this book after reading an excerpt since I was hooked from the word go. I had only known Grace Dent from Masterchef and she had never struck me as particularly amusing on that show. How wrong I was? In turns this book is both funny and sad as it charts Grace's early years in the North East and how she became a writer. It even touches a bit on Masterchef!
There is - obviously - a lot about food in it. Not just about the food Grace (and most of the rest of the country) grew up eating but also about her struggles with dieting when food is so plentiful (and full of sugar and salt). Something I could definitely identify with.
As with so many people Grace's relationships with her nearest and dearest were not always straightforward; her relationship with her father was particularly problematic. Her descriptions of his struggles with dementia are heart-wringing.
