This was a book I was really looking forward to as I have generally been a fan of Grace Dent’s writing in the past. However I found it a book I was a bit disappointed with. It was very evocative of the era and quite funny in parts. However, for some reason I just can’t put my finger on, I just couldn’t really work up the enthusiasm to want to read it after a while and there were some delays in my picking up the book again. However, I did read it through to the end, even though at times i thought about stopping.
It isn’t a bad book by any means but I just found it one that I lost enthusiasm for. Perhaps I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind when I read it and I’m sure that many readers will thoroughly enjoy it.
I suppose that possibly I was hoping that it would be as good as Nigel Slater’s book Toast but that wasn’t fair of me to hope that would be the case as Toast is such a superb book.
