Not what I was expecting

Having known Grace Dent’s writing from when she wrote for The Guardian I was expecting a witty and humorous memoir, including a few funny reflections on our eating habits and the kind of food that passed for meals in the 70s and 80s. This book provided this, and a lot more. I laughed out loud at some turns of phrase and descriptions and nodded along at some memories that landed a bit too close to my own memories of the 90s. Particularly memorable is a section about describing a time before the Internet as being like describing prehistoric times. What I was not expecting was a really moving portrayal of the demands placed on women in the household and the difficulty in balancing a demanding career with parents who are getting older. Although most readers probably cannot imagine being restaurant critics, the struggles of family life are only too relatable.
