Personal, nostalgic and fun!
You may have seen Grace Dent from popular shows such as Masterchef or The Great British Menu. In this memoir, Grace takes us on a culinary journey of her childhood from where she grew up in Currock, Carlisle in north west of England as a 1980โs child with memories of popular commercial junk food like Monster Munch, Cadburyโs Fruit and Nut and Frazzles. As she grows older and moves away from Currock travelling down to London, Grace develops a more sophisticated palate and finds herself in celebrity circles working for Marie Claire, writing a column for the Guardian and also the Mirror. Through these circles she stumbles on the opportunity to become a restaurant critic and Graceโs life enters a new phase in social status and standing, as well as developing a different perspective and relationship with her family.
As I was also born in the mid-80โs this is a totally relatable read with nostalgic memories of my own childhood while reading Grace recount tales of supermarket shops with her parents, meal times and observations of food and eating growing up. It is a delightfully fun and funny read dotted with lots of interesting anecdotes. I also gravitated towards London and since living in London for over 10 years Iโve noticed my own palate and ways of looking at food in a very different light to childhood. However, when I see family I secretly (or not so secretly) indulge in naughty comfort food which connects me to family, and I feel totally relaxed and completely myself ๐
Not sure itโs my place to judge such a personal #memoir . In any case, I canโt fault it based on the insights and stories that Grace writes.
A personal, nostalgic and emotive account of Graceโs childhood based on memories surrounding food and eating. I can see why reviews have described this as โ๐จ๐ค ๐๐ช๐ฃ๐ฃ๐ฎ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐ค๐ช๐จโ.
