I knew that Grace Dent was a Carlisle girl and proud of her Northern heritage, but I did not know about her childhood and her determination to rise to the top of her profession. I know the places she mentions, being a Carlisle born lady too and this added to my pleasure.
The book is a delightful tribute to her parents and her gratitude and love for them. It touches the heart, without being over sentimental and mawkish. Grace writes humorously and there are giggles along the way. She is down to earth and honest about the food of her childhood. Every time I see a purple Cadbury’s wrapper I shall think of Mr Dent. The book charts Grace’s life as she leaves home for university and the ups and downs as her career as a journalist, author, restaurant critic and Masterchef judge, reaches stratospheric heights. I felt her pain when both her parents become ill as they age and she becomes the willing carer, which is a reversal of roles.
She has come a long way from her humble origins, but she has never forgotten where she comes from. Indeed it is a source of pride.
Read and enjoy...I did!
