Was not prepared for such an emotional read!

I recently took part in a readlong for Grace Dent's memoir 'Hungry'. Prior to reading, I had only watched Grace as a judge on Masterchef and as a guest on various panel shows. I thought she always came across incredibly knowledgeable about food, albeit a little intimidating! I was less familiar with her food columns in various newspapers.

The opening chapter was super nostalgic. Grace grew up in the 80s and writes about the food brands she grew up with. Even though I was born in the 90s, I could relate to a lot of what Grace described. I'd completely forgotten about some of the brands mentioned!

My favourite part of the book was learning about Grace's journey from editorial assistant at Marie Claire to one of Britain's much loved food critics. She comes across as very work-focused and driven, but I got the impression she felt guilty for neglecting her family and friends as a result.

I was not prepared for such an emotional ending! No spoilers, but it bought me to tears... a book has never done that to me before!

Overall, this book was better than I was expecting, and I'm glad I was able to take part in the readalong. Thank you to Tandem Collective and HarperCollins UK for the gifted copy of the book!
