'Hungry' by Grace Dent is a really impressive memoir. I've enjoyed listening to Grace on Radio 4 and as a judge on Masterchef but I knew very little about her life before reading this so had no preconceived ideas about what to expect.
I loved the descriptions of her life growing up in the late seventies and early eighties. I looked back nostalgically at the food I used to enjoy with my family and the attempts at social mobility from working class roots. Her acerbic wit is at times laugh out loud funny and incredibly insightful.
Grace does not shy away from brutal honesty about herself and her actions throughout her life, I found this to be very endearing. She is hungry for both food and success and is refreshingly open about this. More women should be unapologetic about being ambitious.
The descriptions of Grace's parents as they age is heartbreaking and moved me to sobs. The juxtaposition of her memories of being cared for lovingly by her Dad to then her having to do the same for him is beautiful in its heart wrenching purity. I throughly recommend this book, I could not put it down.
