As striking, haunting and bold as the book’s title and cover, the first few chapters don’t shy away from harsh truths about life, ballet, ambition, class and envy. I like the hardened perspective of Laurence, who has had to fight for her position for so long that she doesn’t know how to stop. Her love for and dependence on ballet could be her greatest strength or her biggest downfall, so I’m intrigued to see how the story progresses.

I like the frequent mention of monsters and witchcraft as imagery of what intimidates, threatens or defies the expectations of the girls. It will be interesting to see, as the tale goes on, whether these dark comparisons become more than metaphors. I’m a sucker for slow-burn horror elements and I can already see this shaping up to be a read I won’t put down.
