Hints at mystery made this un-put-downable

This extract immediately had me engrossed. I particularly loved the first page (before the first chapter), where you are introduced to the horror element, by having that the first thing you read, it instantly sets the tone for the rest of the novel. Without that, I feel that it wouldn't have been so intriguing. From that first page, all I wanted to know was how, why, what, who, where, when. Once I'd read that, I was looking for little hints and subtleties and picking up things that suggested things weren't quite as they seemed. This made it all the more exciting and makes me hungry for more!
