First of all, this really isn’t my kind of book. However, with that being said, I’m going to look at this objectively rather than influenced by my own opinions.

The story focuses on Laure Mesny. She’s determined to conquer the cutthroat world of ballet. She’s driven and will do anything it takes to prove that she’s can take the centre stage. But, she’s well aware as a black girl, she’s got barriers in her way and attitudes that she will need to defeat. She decides that she will do whatever it takes, even if it means entering into a bargain with a primordial power in the Catacombs beneath Paris.

Laure is promised a number of things - mainly influence and adoration. She does get this but for her, it isn’t enough. She’s surrounded by cruel and privileged people and she wants to better them as well. But the climb to the top is never each and it leaves a path of destruction and broken bodies. They’re not all her doing but she’s a part of it.

She’s got decisions to make… and there will be disastrous consequences.
