This was a slow burner for me but once I grasped the concept I really enjoyed it. Some emotional scenes dealt with in a real and human way. A really lovely idea for a story. Characters were very likeable and realistically flawed. Evan's love for his mum and brother were the heartfelt moments for me. Being a child of the 80's, I loved the ET references and liked that the film meant so much more than that to his family.
Initially I found the jumping between time periods difficult to process so am glad that I read this book in large chunks. If I had dipped in and out, I maybe would have struggled to follow the story as well. The subject of loss and the fragility of life is woven throughout the story in an empathetic way. I liked that a big takeaway for me was that you should not suffer in silence. The characters all needes help from others and were better for it.
