Shosh Bell is a multi-talented singer, musician and actress whose ascending star is halted by the sudden death of her sister. We first meet Shosh after the tragedy, when she is well in to her downward spiral. Her drama teacher encourages her to write poetry, but we find out that Shosh's poetry couplets are not her own work - they are coming to her from a mystical voice.
Evan Taft is dealing with a multitude of issues - his absent father, his mother's illness and worrying about his little brother. He starts to hear a mystical voice singing...
This book will make your heart ache, for many reasons:
You feel Shosh's pain as she deals with the aftermath of her sister's death; every time she speaks or thinks of Stevie, your heart breaks a little bit more for her.
Evan's protective love for his little brother is heartwarming, and you really feel for him as he battles rationalising wanting to make sure his mother and brother are alright and his dream of a gap year in Alaska.
