I Loved You In Another Life is told from the alternating points of view of Evan, who intends to take a gap year in Alaska as well as look after both his seven-year-old brother Will and their single mother and continue therapy to process the departure of his father, and high-school theatre star Shosh who is destined for performing arts college in L.A. in pursuit of her lofty ambitions.

The two central characters - one with plans, the other with dreams - would appear to be contrasting ones, which is also reflected by the author's choice to have Evan's story written in the first person whilst Shosh's tale uses a third person narrator, but they are linked by having to overcome traumatic events in their lives and (in an element of fantasy, perhaps) both hear the voice of a mysterious singer that no-one else can - will this bring them together, as hinted at by the romantic front cover of a couple holding hands, what implications will this have for their existing relationships and, with the use of flashbacks such as the one to Paris 1832 in chapter five, what role will the past have to play?
