I was rather expecting a laugh out loud belly laugh sort of a book, but this is really not that. I have to say that initially I found this book rather hard going, but my husband loved it and encouraged me to persevere and i’m glad he did.

What makes us human is more of a phycogical assessment of man kind than it is about comedy. Ince takes on a journey through various stages and sentiments of life, fear and death included.

I was particularly interested in his assessment of comics as almost scared school boys, shy who use performance as an escape from themselves.

Ince also interviews several of his peers, felllo comics, their interviews and thoughts give further insight into the comic mind. This is fundamentally a book about what makes us human and paints the human race as a funny lot, but funny in the sense of hard to fathom (hence this book) rather than funny ha ha.
