At first I thought this book was for adults, then younger children when I glanced at the cover. Now I have read the extract I would put it as one to read with/to older children, pre-teen. Might be necessary to explain the historical era and setting, even though children of this age may have some knowledge of wartime.

I like the style of writing, quite descriptive but not too dreamy. I think this will appeal to children interested in history, particularly first-hand accounts from children in England at the time of war.
