The topic of the Middle East is an incredibly complex and controversial subject which is impossible to completely cover in one book. However, in my view, In a Time of Monsters by Emma Sky gives a really interesting picture of it. It covers a wide range of places and issues and attempts to explain some of the complicated and far reaching conflicts affecting the area. She also attempts to explain how some of these places reached the situation they are in now.
Sky gives us a lot of really fascinating cultural information as she follows the Arab Spring and travels through numerous countries, all of which have their own histories and atmosphere. The book is often dark due to the subject matter but also provides an interesting perspective in a concise and readable manner. Overall I’d recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the complexities of the Middle East.
