I loved reading 'In a Time of Monsters'! It was so engaging and intriguing to hear all about the cultures of the Middle East, especially in such tense political times, and when all we really hear about it in the news are stories of fear. Her descriptions of the people, especially the role of the young, and the way she felt so at home were revelatory to hear and would spark a great desire to travel in any reader, even if not to to the same regions and areas that Sky was in.
It's an area of the world that has such a complex history that oftentimes it can be remarkably difficult to understand, but Emma Sky wrote in such a way that it was far easier to gage the climate and reality of areas, as well as hearing about the dangerous encounters she has had. I also found it fascinating to hear about the world of diplomats in these countries and her experiences after leaving the army.
