First of all, the cover is very simple but intriguing and mysterious. The quote: “The realms make monsters of us all” adds to the intrigue and sets the tone for the type of world the characters exist in.
This is further developed in the early world building where the author establishes that the characters we’ll be following throughout the course of the book are immersed in a magical, criminal underworld. She makes it abundantly clear from the very first line, and capitalises on it when we get introduced to the ‘underboss’ - there are very serious magical mob vibes, and I am here for it.
It would seem that the three characters we are introduced to in the opening chapters are going to be the main players, and there is already intrigue with them. Tavia is a good choice to open the story, and I enjoyed seeing the conflict in her about the life she leads - she doesn’t have much of a choice in the matter. I especially want to find out more about Saxony and Wesley’s stories since there is only so much we can get from Tavia’s point of view - I am really hoping for povs from them. I am also anticipating meeting the ‘kingpin’ very soon without knowing it.
Finally, I will be thinking about the riddle in the first chapter up until I get to read this.
It is so clearly a set up for the events about to unfold in this book, and I have a very strong feeling this is something to do with the war many years earlier, the loss of the ability to create new magic and what happened to Tavia’s friend.
I’m looking forward to the mystery unfolding and delving further into this world.
