Having read and enjoyed her previous book I had reasonably high hopes for this one that sadly weren’t met. Honestly I did think the premise and larger plot were interesting and had a lot of potential but I found the execution lacking. The chapters were long and quite dense making it more of a chore to get from incident to incident and at least two of the main characters felt flat and annoying. I will say that I thought the world building was really impressive and probably the only 3D part of the whole thing. I thought the city felt alive, the history and legends of the world were well considered and interesting. It’s just a shame that the rest of the potential in this novel just wasn’t met for me.
