Really enjoyed this one although I haven't read a great deal of the fantasy genre.
Told from multiple characters points of view the story follows Tavia, a street busker, working hard to earn enough money selling potions to escape her home of Creije, Wesley an ambitious, aspiring Under boss who hopes to become the next kingpin, Karam a scrappy, feisty fighter who earns her keep in the underground fighting rings and Saxony bent on revenge for the wrongs committed on her people.
None of these fully trust the others but they are thrown together when a bigger force than them threatens the kingdom so must work as one to stop an evil, insidious new magic from taking over their home before all they know is destroyed.
I thought this was a good, solid start to a new fantasy series and it seemed to have a kind of "Streetwise" edge to it what with gang warfare and fights over illegal magics so had some great fantasy elements with a sort of modern social slants.
