Oh I absolutely inhaled this book.

Welcome to the deadly streets of Creije where magic is sold and bought.

This is the first of a new duology from Alexandra Christo and my god is it a good.

Tavia is a busker, working for her friend-turned underboss Wesley. Tavia’s job is to sell dark magic on the streets to the unsuspecting. Her wares aren’t legitimate and she uses her charm and tricks to sell them. She does this with the hope of one day leaving the streets of Creije behind.

She works with her friend Saxony and has been given a new potion to sell, something called Loj (if I recall) and Saxony tries it to see if it really does bring luck only for it to almost kill her and marking her neck with the sign of magic sickness, which killed Tavias mum.

Knowing now that Loj is a new form of magic, means there must be crafters once again. Wesley wants to know what is going on and whether the kingpin knew what Loj was and what his game plan is. We also shift chapters here to a man that has bought Loj from Tavia before Saxony tried it and it’s clear that it is deadly. It’s turning people into killers and these killers are trying to turn others to form an army.

This crooked crew isn’t just made up of Wes, Saxony and Tavia but the wonderful Karam as well. They all work for Wesley and he ropes them in to finding out what it going on to his beloved Creije.

They embark on a mission to overthrow the kingpin, each having a different reason to do so. There’s friendships, loyalties and lives at stake and this unlikely crew just navigate their own differences for the greater good.

I think it’s a toss up between Wesley and Tavia for my favourite, I love both their characters and think they bounce well off each other. Karam is a sweetheart and I love her relationship with Saxony. More of that please!!

Now the ending, damn! How can you leave it like that??? I want more!

I’ve purposely left out some bit spoilers here as to not ruin the story for others but I did love it. I think people may not get past the similarity of this story to others like it but if you can look at this as a stand-alone and not compare it to others, you’re in for a treat.
